The SMB advantage nobody talks about in AI
Most of the conversation about AI and small business is about cost. Cheaper software, fewer contractors, faster shipping. All true, and all beside the point — everyone gets those discounts, including whoever is about to compete with you.
The advantage nobody talks about is context. A venture-backed team entering your market has to buy the knowledge you already have: which step of a closing actually stalls, which compliance rule everyone quietly works around, which customers pay late and why. You learned that over fifteen years of invoices and phone calls. AI can generate software in an afternoon. It cannot generate that.
Building used to be the expensive part. Now judgment is the scarce part — and domain experts already own it.
For decades, the economics ran one way: knowing what to build was cheap, building it was expensive. AI inverted that. When anyone can ship a working product in a weekend, the products that win are the ones aimed at problems worth solving — and the people best positioned to know which problems those are aren't in San Francisco. They're running title agencies, clinics, brokerages, and freight desks.
There's a catch. Cheap building makes it tempting to skip validation entirely — to build first and ask questions never. Your context is an advantage only if you treat it as a source of testable bets, not a license to trust your gut. The good news: your first ten customers already return your calls. Start there, with evidence.
